Having a daily creative blog can be difficult. Whether it be, illustrative, photographic, video, written or musical it can be hard to maintain on a daily basis and many people who start one of these tend to stop not long after. I should know, I have a daily character illustration blog and it has been difficult at times. Considering this here are 5 tips to keep your daily creative blog on track, based on my own experience.

1. Set Some Rules for Yourself

If you set rules for yourself you creative blog will be more structured. Make rules for what kind of content you will post each day, make sure you have a theme of some kind. Aim for a time you want to post by each day, that way you will have something to aim for. When I first started my deadline was 11.59PM but yours might be 9PM, all depends on your schedule. Whatever rules you set for yourself make sure that they are not restrictive, otherwise you will not enjoy your what you are doing.

2. Be willing to work ahead

Sometimes your life is just too busy to create something everyday. You might have work, school, illness/injury or an array of other things in your life stopping you from being creative. So with that in mind it is okay to work ahead. Weather this be through planning what creative output you will have this week or working on tomorrow’s output today, I believe it is okay to do as long as you have something to show for it everyday. I often work a few days ahead, especially if I know life will get busy in the coming days.

3. Try new things

When creating things everyday it is easy for your work to get a little stale. to stop this from happening try experimenting in different ways. Use different materials or try a different style. I have often set up a themed week that is much different to what I might normally do for some extra variety.

4. Show off your work

Show off your creative blog to as many people you know. Why? 1. Feedback is always appreicated and allows for you to grow as a creative and 2. by showing off your work you know that people are seeing it, and hopefully enjoying it, and that can be great encouragement for you to continue your creative work.

A great place to show off your work is at MakeSomething365, which showcases daily creative blogs.

5. Enjoy what you are doing.

The more you enjoy your daily creative blog the more likely you are going to continue working on it.

By Trevor Van As

Trevor Van As is the man behind Project Daily, a daily character illustration blog that has been running for over 625 consecutive days.

This an exercise as part of my Typography unit in which I had to create the word type without the add of a computer. Part of the exercise required me to present in a clockwise fashion.

I decided I would chew a lot of gum and present it in a way so the chewed bubble gum created the letters and look like they were either under a shoe or desk.

I got really tired of chewing gum during the making of the exercise.

Introductions

Hi everyone I am Trevor Van As, and this is my first (of many) post on Tumblr. I was using MySpace Blogs for the past two months to host my blog but found it was on the decline while Tumblr seemed to be on the rise.

I will have to reintroduce myself to those who are not aware of me and a quick way of doing this is regurgitating what I wrote two months ago on my MySpace blog as not much has changed.

Hi everyone,

I thought I would introduce myself and tell you about who I am and what I do. Firstly My name is Trevor and I am a Freelance Creative based in Melbourne, Australia.

What is a “Freelance Creative”? Well essentially I am a creative person who works on a freelance basis doing all kinds of work from animation to web design and development to illustration (vector and 3D).

My goals are to create visually interesting and functional work that meets the need of the clients so they use it to achieve their goals. Whether this be for promotional purposes, entertainment, education or informing. I also aim to create fresh ideas in order to push the boundaries.

I have a website and it can be viewed at trevorvanas.com

Also feel free to follow me on Twitter at TVA_Freelance

Or like me on Facebook at Trevor Van As Freelance Creative

I might as well link you the old blog also as it has a few interesting posts on there that may be worth reading. You can check it out here.

I use this blog to keep everyone up to date on what i have been up to creatively but also I will discuss things I see that i think are interesting on a design or interactive point of view.

Well that is it for me now but I will be posting something something very soon so keep posted.
